The Omaha Public Safety Headquarters consolidates administrative functions for both police and fire departments, including investigative units, a forensic laboratory, emergency medical services support, a real-time crime center and fire prevention/public education programming. It includes dedicated wellness spaces for staff and secure operational areas for specialized public safety functions. It will house more than 300 professionals and help anchor the nearby Crossroads mixed-use development.
The design features a public-facing concourse, flexible auditorium and outdoor plaza that can serve as event space. Extensive use of glass and integrated displays promote transparency and celebrate the city’s public safety service legacy. Along the building will be historic public safety exhibits including a peekaboo window showcasing an old fire truck and police cruiser.
Security is woven into the site and building design so not to detract from the welcoming nature of the facility. Instead of bollards, site walls and planters enhance the plaza experience and provide a layer of separation between the street and the building.
