Creighton University Medical Center’s newest academic campus modernized and renovated more than 440,000 square feet of its School of Medicine, transforming the facility into a dynamic, integrated academic health environment. The project includes advanced clinical skills laboratories that support both pre-clinical education and complex clinical scenario training, creating immersive, real-world learning experiences for students and residents.
Clinical Skills–Based Learning Environment
Through collaboration with 28 distinct user groups, the design team created a clinical skills–based learning environment that fosters interdisciplinary dialogue. Purpose-built spaces equipped with state-of-the-art technology support case discussions, research development, simulation, and collaborative problem-solving. Students, residents, faculty, and physicians learn side-by-side, reinforcing a culture of mentorship and team-based care while shaping the next generation of medical leaders.
Team-Based Learning & Care
A central challenge was reconciling the operational and cultural differences between academic medicine and private healthcare delivery. Working closely with stakeholders from Creighton University and CHI Health, the team implemented the PACT (Patient Aligned Care Team) model. This approach strategically distinguishes patient care zones from academic and staff spaces, allowing clinical operations and medical education to coexist efficiently. The result is a balanced environment that supports both separation and collaboration—enhancing patient experience while preserving educational excellence.
Real-Life Project-Based Learning
Flexibility was central to the programming strategy. Multiple adaptable academic spaces allow seamless transitions between a “state-of-the-art clinic” and a “world-class teaching hospital.” The final solution expanded the campus by 150,000 square feet and ensures accessibility for patients of all abilities. These environments mirror real clinical settings, providing hands-on, project-based learning opportunities that prepare students for immediate impact in practice.
Rural Health & Community Impact
Beyond campus boundaries, the project strengthens healthcare access across Nebraska. By expanding training capacity and providing advanced clinical education environments, the new facility helps address the state’s shortage of healthcare professionals—particularly in rural communities—supporting a healthier future for the region.
