The Avera Platte Health Center is a critical access hospital in southeastern South Dakota. Avera Health and Platte Health Center have a partnership and co-manage the facility, comprised of a hospital, outpatient services, clinic & nursing home.

Patients regularly visit the Health Center for clinical visits and routine tests. The Health Center did a study to see how many steps an average patient takes in a visit and found them to be more than expected. This was due to how spread out many of the patient care areas are between the clinic and the hospital.

To improve the patient experience, it was decided to move radiology (x-ray, mammography & DEXA scans), lab and draw areas, and PTOT service areas to the front of the building to limit the number of steps a patient would need to take. To make room for this work, the clinic also required a smaller reconfiguration that would allow them to keep their exam room ratios at current levels.

The project also included a change to the main entrance. Previously there were two entrances, one for the clinic and one for the hospital. This led to confusion and an inefficient parking layout which also increased the steps taken by patients during a visit. The creation of a single entrance with a new reception area will greatly simplify and clarify the overall patient experience.
