The inspiration behind “Taking Flight”

Enrique Greenwell and Ryan Christensen discuss the creative ideation behind the concept of converting airplane fuselages into luxury suites

More than 600 airplanes are retired each year, becoming fuselage in aircraft graveyards.

What if we could design them a new life?

The LEO A DALY hospitality team, working on a submission for the Radical Innovation awards, has developed “Taking Flight,” a concept to convert aircraft fuselage into sustainable, hyper-personalized lodging. Forbes recently featured the concept, writing: “For those wanting to experience something entirely new, the future of hospitality might just be on the wings of yesterday’s aircraft.”

The concept offers travelers a one-of-a-kind stay in an unforgettable, hyper-personalized private suite. However, the approach isn’t purely for a novel guest experience; it’s an opportunity to design responsibly for a more resourceful, responsive and resilient hospitality market.

“Instead of a lifecycle that is cradle-to-grave,” said Design Director Enrique Greenwell, “we could complete a full circle and go cradle-to-cradle, and define a new life for something that is no longer functional.”
