Project Description
Publix Super Markets Inc., a privately held company founded in 1930 and operating more than 1,000 stores across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee, selected LEO A DALY to design a new refrigerated distribution center in Orlando, Florida. The site had been redeveloped from agricultural land to an industrial setting.
Located directly north of the runways at Orlando International Airport, the project required careful attention to vertical design components to meet FAA height restrictions. The completed warehouse features multiple roof heights, ranging from 65 feet to 40 feet, to accommodate flight paths. Roofing and structural systems were engineered to withstand high‑speed winds, and electrical systems were designed to safeguard the building against lightning strikes.
The high‑tech center was designed to respond to logistics challenges while reducing operational costs and maximizing efficiency. The campus incorporates numerous utility‑saving strategies, including a patented air‑flow system for the freezers, 100% backup power for operations, and motion‑activated LED lighting to reduce electrical consumption and enhance natural daylighting. The refrigeration system includes the latest energy‑efficient controls to monitor and minimize operating costs.
Integrated into the core support areas is a 2,000 SF commercial‑grade kitchen and an 8,000 SF cafeteria capable of serving 400 employees at once. The $118M project created roughly 150 new jobs within three years and became the ninth distribution center for the Lakeland‑based grocer.
