Florida Atlantic University, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute
The 41,750-SF (3,800 SM) Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) facility houses advance research labs with an emphasis on Marine Biology and Oceanographic studies.
Facilities were built in support of HBOI’s strategic plan of ocean exploration, understanding marine ecosystem function, wise use of marine resources, and innovative technology development.
Specialized ocean engineering and technology facilities in use by HBOI include:
- Bio-photonics salt water test tanks
- A fully-equipped prototype development machine shop
- An ocean visibility and optics lab utilizing lasers used to develop new undersea imaging techniques.
- Specialized equipment, such as manned submersibles, allows scientists to bioprospect novel deep-water compounds in the search for disease cures.
The Institute was designed for Florida Atlantic University, a world leader in ocean exploration, maintaining a concerted focus on ocean-sourced discoveries.
