Sustainable Design: Our commitment and plan to design responsibly for the future

At LEO A DALY, we hold the long view on sustainable design as responsible design, and that’s why we are signatories of all industry commitments on sustainability. The responsible use of resources translates to long term returns for our clients and communities through high performance buildings, improved open space, and healthy interior environments. Sustainability is a core value of LEO A DALY, and the firm has championed sustainable practices and materials across the markets it operates in.
LEO A DALY’s 2025 Sustainability Action Plan highlights our commitment to responsible design and the steps we’ll take to ensure we continue to build on our progress.
“As an integrated design firm, we have an opportunity to introduce sustainability and efficiency in all our work,” said Kim Cowman, national director of engineering. “This plan will help guide us to move forward on sustainability as one of the core values of our firm.”
LEO A DALY’s sustainability plan includes five key principles:
- High performance design: Every design begins with benchmarking its energy performance so we explore all potential design solutions to enhance performance.
- Decarbonization: Our experienced professionals provide, measure and evaluate a range of carbon–reducing and carbon-free options that align with project and operational goals.
- Responsible materials: Selecting and specifying materials and products that prioritize people and planet is key to responsible design.
- Wellbeing: Our design process focuses on wellbeing across scales – from individual spaces within buildings to buildings themselves, and beyond to the context of neighborhoods and communities.
- Post-occupancy evaluation: Using defined research methodologies, we work with owners to gather operational data and user feedback from building occupants after construction is complete and business operations are underway. All project stakeholders and partners benefit from this documentation which goes beyond operational efficiencies and drives continuous improvement for the built environment.
The document includes action plans for LEO A DALY’s sustainability pledges, including AIA 2030, SE2050, AIA Materials Pledge, and MEP 2040. These commitments ensure we appropriately track our sustainability progress and continue to enhance our sustainability offerings.
“This document represents our commitment to sustainability across the firm,” said President Steve Lichtenberger. “By following the plan outlined within, we will reach new heights of sustainable work.”
